Alfredo Abeijon

IN MEMORIAM 1940-2018

Thoughtful, gentle, and kind. Alfredo will be remembered by all of us who had the good fortune to know him as a man of intellect, art, distinction and charm.

Born March 30, 1940, in Tres Arroyos, Argentina, Alfredo was the eldest of three brothers. After studying architecture in Buenos Aires, Alfredo travelled Europe for five years, living, working and studying in various countries. It was during this time that Alfredo learned French at the Sorbonne in Paris.

After briefly returning to Argentina in the late 1960’s, Alfredo made up his mind to move for good and soon set out for New York City. As fate would have it, on his journey Alfredo got a ride with some fellows destined for Montreal. New York would have to wait. Arriving in Montreal in 1971, Alfredo worked as an architectural draftsman. A year later, he met Elizabeth Cameron and the two were soon making plans to travel the world; Europe, Asia and South America.

At the age of 45, Alfredo enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program at Concordia University. Working on his BFA part-time, Alfredo took full advantage of his access to the University woodshop. Upon completion of his BFA in the early 1990s, Alfredo joined CLARK.

In his art practice, Alfredo Abeijon was interested in the possible and necessary relationships between humanity and the world — our relationships to others, daily life, community and the structure of beliefs. In 2007, he presented an exhibition at CLARK entitled Mythe/Temple, in which, through the use of wood and the model house, Alfredo invited us on an evocative journey to the heart of architecture and modern philosophy, speaking directly to humanity and the interpretation of our relationships to the world we inhabit.

This interest in humanity was also very apparent in his everyday life. Throughout his time at CLARK, Alfredo was always a source of light, good humour and consideration for others. He will be missed by us and by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

With great love.
