Michael White, Machinery of violence, 2015

CLARK is proud to be the host residency partner for Scottish artist Michael White. This partnership stems from a residency exchange agreement that was concluded between the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) and Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA). At a date that will be soon confirmed, Michael White will give an artist talk to present the results of his Montreal-based research.

Michael White is an artist based in Glasgow, Scotland. He graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2009 and has exhibited internationally. In 2015, he and a group of local artists set up a gallery in their home called Celine.

White attempts to use his practice as a means of navigating and understanding the constantly shifting dynamic of contemporary ideology, dissecting the ways in which cultures of faith and ideology manifest themselves as material realities.  Appropriating a wide variety of imagery from contemporary mainstream media and readymade forms to reconfigure existing syntactical structures he aims to subvert prevalent, often reductive readings of events or phenomena, favouring an exploration of underlying principles which shape our shared ideological landscape. With an increasing focus on research, White uses a diversity of media, working fluidly between the studio and in collaboration with fabricators such as garment-makers, upholsterers and illustrators with the objective to generate works which attend to wider, mutable cultural languages and contexts.

While the material conclusions of this practice differ considerably between projects, his process is one of conceptual expediency which relies heavily on the uses of détournement and defacement to subvert the reading of materials which are fundamentally defined by an immediate social function.

In 2016, White undertook a residency in Harare, Zimbabwe at artist-run gallery and studio space Village Unhu with the support of The British Council. Recent exhibitions include La Bourse des Valeurs at Artists Club/Coffre Fort, Brussels (2017), Machinery of Violence at Young Team HQ, London (2015), Democrats, Republicans, Capitalists and Creeps… and You at The Green Gallery, Milwaukee (2015) and Viva Maria at Galeria Luciana Brito, Sao Paulo (2014). In 2018, White will participate in Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art.
